The speech world-renowned neurosurgeon and New York Times best-selling author Dr. Benjamin Carson gave at this year's National Prayer Breakfast is generating unexpected buzz.
Standing just feet from the president Thursday, Carson criticized higher taxes on the wealthy and advocated changes to the health care system that promote personal responsibility, not more government control.
"Here's my solution: When a person is born, give him a birth certificate, an electronic medical record, and a health savings account to which money can be contributed—pretax—from the time you're born till the time you die," Carson proposed.
"If you die, you can pass it on to your family members, and there's nobody talking about death panels. We can make contributions for people who are indigent," he continued.
"Instead of sending all this money to some bureaucracy, let's put it in their HSAs. Now they have some control over their own health care. And very quickly they're going to learn how to be responsible," he said.
Carson also talked about how a hyper-political correctness is muzzling national dialogue on important issues.
"The PC police are out in force at all times. … We've reached a point where people are actually afraid to talk about what they want to say," he said.
"What we need to do in this PC world is forget about unanimity of speech and unanimity of thought and we need to concentrate on being respectful of those people with whom we disagree," he added.
