We Want Community

Postmodern thinking from books, movies and radio has changed the way Christians interact with Scripture. “Emergent” Christians are moving away from a modern, rational, individual way of being to a more pragmatic, inclusive way of living in which we experience life subjectively with our community.

Communities such as colleges have provided opportunities for this generation to see one another without facades, forcing them to be more open-minded. But what happens when they enter the church? Are they being engaged? Is the church being open-minded to include this generation in its community? Emerging Christians seek more organic relationships. They want a community where both they and the church can share struggles and frustrations together, where both can be transparent.

The church needs a move toward faith that is fully and holistically integrated with the lives of the community. Emergent Christians seek faith that is more concrete and applies to the world around them. They care about the ecology of the planet, and about the poor and the homeless, the widow and the orphan. The emergent Christian wants to live a life that makes a difference, that moves beyond dogma to engage real issues both in local communities and worldwide. If the church builds ways to incorporate community, authenticity and a relevant faith, they will grasp emergent Christians.
