Looking For A Hero
Harry R. Jackson, Jr.
I enthusiastically support John McCain's candidacy for president this year. My reasons are a mix of practical issues and spiritual principles. It took me months of biblical research and policy analysis to settle upon McCain. In making my decision, I had to prioritize my belief in the scriptures because of the three different roles I play in life: a Christian, an American citizen and a member of the black community.
As a citizen, I view energy policy, immigration reform, and our defense against radical Islam as three major issues that will define America for the next two decades.
McCain will expand domestic oil and natural gas exploration and production. This approach will lessen energy speculation and bring down the cost of energy in both the short and long term. No matter what Congress thinks, we cannot change the law of supply and demand. A small change in supply will have a major impact in energy costs.
In addition, the nation cannot reduce its dependency on oil unless we change how we power our transportation sector. Therefore McCain proposes a $300 million prize to improve battery technology for full commercial development of plug-in hybrid and fully electric automobiles.
He also supports flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs) and a myriad of other approaches that will expand consumer choices. Smarter conservation and development of all alternative energy sources, including expanding the use of nuclear power, are a part of McCain's solution.
Radical environmentalists are attempting to influence legislators to limit energy supplies, which will artificially drive up prices. Higher energy prices will have a damaging affect on the poor who spend up to 50 percent of their incomes on energy. The poor are urban dwellers, the rural agricultural community, and the elderly. Regardless of the category, the poor are voiceless and often overlooked in public policy.
In the short term, energy policies will accelerate or retard our economic comeback during the next two years. Unfortunately energy policy reform, alone, will not turn the entire economy around. Fixing the economy will be like winning an arm wrestling contest with an octopus, yet it can be done.
As mentioned earlier, comprehensive immigration reform will shape the nation for decades. McCain has demonstrated a passion for a bi-partisan solution to this problem. He will eventually get it right. Finally, McCain realizes that the threat of radical Islam will not be negotiated away.
As an African-American, I am pleased that Barack Obama has been so widely accepted. America is ready for a black president. Sen. Obama's candidacy is a sign that America has grown racially. On the other hand, I am not convinced that the senator is the right black man at this time.
As a Christian, I believe that our next president will need more than human wisdom, organizational skill, or experience. He will need the blessing of God and a Davidic anointing and grace to defeat the Goliaths of our day. If the nation follows godly principles in the most important moral issues, we will attract the approval of God.
Please read the issue comparison chart below objectively. Next, ask yourself which candidate is most likely to ensure the blessings of God for the nation.

Although the press has labeled conservative biblical positions on marriage and life as "divisive," it is difficult to believe that the Lord is pleased that from 1973 through 2005, more than 45 million legal abortions occurred. In addition, changing the definition of marriage is more than a civil rights issue. Redefining marriage simultaneously changes the definition of a family, sex education in schools, and scores of other unintended consequences. The blessing of God will clearly follow the policy positions of the first candidate. As you have probably guessed, the first candidate is McCain; the second is Obama.
Time will not allow me to list all the contemporary problems that we could solve through a biblical approach. The Church should do more than just pray during this election; she should decide to be the ultimate swing vote - transforming the landscape of American political culture. You can read more about these principles in my book, Personal Faith Public Policy.
In conclusion, I would like to repeat the words of Griffin Bell, a Democrat and former attorney general, as he introduced John McCain at the dedication of the National Prisoner of War Museum. Bell boldly declared "we often hear people...say, where are our heroes…Senator John McCain is an authentic, living American hero."
I don't know about you, but I am looking for a hero.

Mr. Jackson it is not clear if you have a litmus test for your decision but based on the following websites John McCain's position on abortion is that they should be legal when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape or when the life of the woman is endangered.
Per John McCain's website, he supports stem-cell research.

These candidates are but men and as such are flawed. As Christians we have to be good stewards and realize politics is a very dirty business.
It was a wise move to remove Kim Daniel's blog and replace it with Rev. Jackson. He showed why he supports Sen. McCain rather than demonizing Sen. Obama.
Ms. Daniel's response to critics was harsh, threatening, and embarrassing.
As a believer, I am supporting Sen. Obama because he and Biden are the best men for this secular job.
McCain is too erratic and Palin is shallow and unqualified. Holding a political pro-life position does not automatically make one more qualified than one holding a pro-choice position.
Christians must not turn off their minds and common sense when "interviewing" politicians for civil office.
In my view, McCain/Palin's lies are as sinful as Obama's pro-choice position.
Standards for church leaders and civil leaders are not the same.
FYI: I am an African American and supporting Obama because he is the best man for the SECULAR job of President. Biden is qualified to become president if necessary.
Should have wrote, "It was wise to remove Ms. Daniel's blog from the Charisma home page...."
Sooooooooooo many misguided christians, all going for Obama even though GOD said "Blessed is the man that walks NOT in the counsel of the UNGODLY." (PS1:1) The constitution and every other FOUNDING DOCUMENT of this nation was NOT SECULAR! They were Christian based. GO READ PEOPLE!
Fortunately, however, GOD is on the side of his CHURCH (all who choose to obey with acts of obedience in accord with HIS WORD) and has answered our prayers. MCCAIN/PALIN is HIS CHOICE and THEY WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Praise the Lord! The counsel of the heathen is brought to NOUGHT! He makes the devises of the people of NONE EFFECT! (PS 33:10)
Secular activities are not necessarily a rejection of God as much as it is an acknowledgement that non-religious persons are not excluded.
The framers did not want a state church like England in the 1700's, nor did they want a government that was hostile to God.
Our form of government recognizes God as the source of authority without forcing all citizens or office holders to be Christians in order to be respected.
HELP GOD! WE NEED YOUR HELP! WE HAVE HAD FIVE REPUPLICAN PRESIDENTS IN OFFICE, AND WE HAVE HAD TWO DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTS IN OFFICE FROM 1973 TO NOW, AND YOU MEAN TO TELL ME THAT 45 MILLION BABIES HAVE BEEN ELIMINATED? YOU MEAN TO TELL ME WE DON'T NEED HELP!? NOW I AM NOT GOING TO COUNT HOW MANY LEADERS WE’VE HAD IN THE CHURCH. LORD HELP US. I AM NOT GIONG TO COUNT HOW MANY CHRISTANS ARE IN THE CHURCH...SO MANY!!! YOU MEAN TO TELL ME 45 MILLION BABIES ARE GONE.LORD HELP US!. 26 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE .MY GOD,WE IN TROUBLE. AND WE ARE WORRIED ABOUT CHANGE? COUNTLESS BODIES OF YOUNG MEN DIEING IN THE STREETS . MY GOD, WE NEED HELP. SIN IS EVERWHERE! I WANT TO KNOW, WHERE IS THE POWER????? WE NEED A CHANGE! SIN IS A THREE LETTER WORD THAT CARRIES A LOT OF WEIGHT.
EXPERIENCE IS GOOD WHEN YOU'VE GOT WISDOM, KNOWLEDGE,AND GOOD JUDGEMENT BEHIND IT. WHEN YOU HAVE GOD LEADING THE WAY. HIS LEADERSHIP IS BETTER THAN MANS . IT IS A SHAME BEFORE GOD THAT AFTER ALMOST 27 YEARS WE HAVE HAD 45 MILLION BABIES TO BE ELIMINATED. YOUNG MEN ARE DIEING ON THE STREETS BY THE DOZENS, AND WE ARE WORRIED ABOUT SEN. OBAMA? WAKE UP!!! WE NEED TO TURN BACK TO GOD! I BELIEVE WE NEED TO CALL A NATIONAL PRAYER MEETING WHERE ALL OF US STOP BLAMING AND BEGIAN PRAYING AND CRYING OUT TO GOD FOR MERCY,PEACE,LOVE,HOPE,AND HELP. THEN.... GOD WILL MOVE IN OUR COUNTRY AGAIN. NO WONDER THE DEVIL IS ON THE RAMPAGE, ITS BECAUSE WE NEED TO TAKE A STAND FOR GOD AS ONE PEOPLE.
WE HAVE A HERO!!!! GOD THE FATHER SENT HIM ALMOST 2000 YEARS AGO….HIS NAME IS JESUS CHRIST! HE PAID A HIGH PRICE FOR THE HURTING SOULS, HE HAS THE “SCARS” TO PROVE IT. I GUARANTEE IF WE LET HIM MOVE IN OUR NATION, WE WON’T HAVE TO MAKE ANY LAWS, BECAUSE WE WILL BE LIVING BY GODS LAW OF LOVE.
CATCH HOLD TO THE REAL HERO THAT HAS THE POWER TO DELIVER EVERY MANS SOUL. WHEN HE CAME HE BROUGHT POWER IN HIS HANDS…AND WHEN HE LEFT HE INTRUSTED YOU AND I WITH THIS SAME POWER TO CHANGE A MAN & WOMANS SOUL.
HE SAID“…. GREATER WORKS SHALL YOU DO….” TO BRING SOULS INTO GODS KINGDOM.
GOD LOVES ALL MANKIND, BUT HE KNEW MANKIND WAS BLIND AND COULD NOT SEE.
HE HAS RAISED UP MEN & WOMEN OF GOD TO REACH THE LOST AT ANY COST. IF IT MEANS LAYING OUT IN GODS PRESENCE DAY AND NIGHT UNTIL GOD MOVES ONCE AGAIN WEVE GOT TO DO IT, WE NEED TO DO IT! HE TOLD US TO GO INTO THE VINEYARD AND WORK AND I WILL REPAY. LET US STOP CRYING FOR MAN TO CHANGE THE WORLD WHEN… CHURCH…..GOD HAS GIVEN US HIS POWER BY HIS HOLY GHOST TO BRING CHANGE TO THE WORLD. LETS GET OUT OFOUR COMFORT ZONES AND MEET TOGHETHER IN THE STREETS. ONE CHURCH MEETS THE NEXT CHURCH, AND THE NEXT CHURCH MEET THE NEXT CHURCH AND BEGIN TO PRAY TO GOD AROUND THE CLOCK. OPEN UP THE HOUSE OF GOD AND LET THE UNSAVED RUN IN SAYING “WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED“? LET THE GOVERNMENT TAKE CARE OF THEIR JOB, AND LET THE PEOPLE OF GOD TAKE CARE OF GODS WORK.
GOD HAS GRACE, MERCY, AND LOVE FOR THE LOST SOUL.
IT WILL BE JOY IN THE STREETS BECAUSE THEY WILL SAY I MET A MAN WHO TOLD ME ALL ABOUT MYSELF AND NOW, THE LORD HAS CLEANSED ME AND FILLED ME WITH THE HOLY GHOST. NOW I CAN SEE WHAT I COULDN’T SEE BEFORE. I’VE BEEN CHANGED BY JESUS CHRIST…THE “HERO”
WAKE UP CHURCH!!! OUR CALLING IS SO MUCH HIGHER THAN WE REALIZE. WE HAVE BEEN CALLED OUT OF DARKNESS INTO THE LIGHT…TO BE A LIGHT…. “SET ON A HILL THAT CANNOT BE HID” YOU SEE, WHERE THE LIGHT IS, DARKNESS CANNOT, AND WILL NOT STAY. EVERY HURTING MAN,WOMAN,BOY AND GIRL WILL SEE THE LIGHT AND COME RUNNING TO IT. NO ONE WANTS TO LIVE IN DARKNESS, BECAUSE THEY WILL FALL OVER EVERY THING, THEY WILL FALL OVER ABORTION, DIFFERENT LIFESTYLES, LIES, DRUGS,UNHAPPINESS, DEPRESSION, DISCOURAGEMENT,LONLINESS,HATRED, BITTERNESS, DECEPTION,MISJUDGEMENT, KILLING, ADULTERY, AND FORNICATION, BECAUSE THEY CANNOT SEE THE RIGHT WAY. BUT IF WE TURN ON THE LIGHT THEN!…..THEN!….THEN!… THEY WILL KNOW AND SEE THE REAL HERO JESUS CHRIST.
JESUS,THE ,ONE WHO LOVES THEM , THE ONE WHO DIED FOR THEM, THE ONE WHO SHED HIS BLOOD FOR THEM ON THE CROSS, THE ONE WHO CAME TO GIVE THEM HOPE, THE ONE WHO CAME TO REVEAL THE FATHER, THE ONE WHO CAME AND SAID I’LL NEVER LEAVE YOU NOR FORSAKE YOU, THE ONE WHO CAME AND LEFT THEM HIS PEACE THAT PASSES ALL UNDERSTANDING. THE ONE WHO CAME AND GAVE POWER TO HAVE DIGNITY, INTEGRETY, AND CHARACTER……..THIS IS JESUS……..HE IS THE HERO WHO LIVES FOR EVER MORE! NOW ASK YOURSELF IS HE DEAD OR DID HE RISE. HERE IS MY ANSWER… JESUS IS ALIVE AND WELL AND HE HAS GOT ALL POWER IN HIS HAND AND YOU KNOW WHAT? HE HAS INTRUSTED THIS POWER TO HIS LITTLE EARTHLY IMAGES LIKE YOU AND ME
!!! HALLELUJAH!!! JESUS I LOVE YOU!!!! YOU ARE THE KING OF MY LIFE, AS A MATTER OF FACT YOU ARE THE KING OF KINGS AND LORDS OF LORDS…PRAISE THE LORD!!!! GOD YOU DID NOT LEAVE MAN OUT, WE ARE MADE AFTER YOUR IMAGE AND LIKENESS. JESUS IS COMING BACK TO GET GODS IMAGE AND LIKENESS AND TAKE BACK HOME TO THE FATHER. I CAN IMAGINE IN MY MIND JESUS SAYING TO THE FATHER I WAS THEIR HERO, AND THEY BECAME MY LITTLE HEROS. THEY CAME UP THROUGH PAIN, RAIN, HEARTACHE, AND BLAME BUT NOW THEY HAVE A PLACE IN MY BOOK AND I’VE WRITTEN THEIR NAME. I ’VE WRITTEN IT DOWN IN MY BLOOD SO I’LL NEVER FORGET THOSE WHO ARE MINE. MINE. THE SONG WRITER SAID “THEY SHALL BE MINE SAITH THE LORD WHEN HE COMES TO MAKE UP HIS JEWELS THEY SHAL BE MINE.”
SOMEBODY SAY AMEN, AMEN, AMEN.
LOVE LIFETD ME, WHEN NOTHING ELSE COULD HELP. EVEN A MANS LAW CAN’T CHANGE A MAN WHEN HE IS BLIND AND CAN‘T SEE, BUT GODS LOVE CAN CHANGE HIM FROM THE INSIDE OUT. (THANK YOU JESUS)!

God says, there is a sway in the political arena, a change in your political world. Enough of this discussion about Jeremiah Wright. God said, this makes no difference. It is a spirit that has endeavored to rock and sway the people and to divide them. God said, I will sway it next week. Yes, I will, and because of Pennsylvania I will raise up the man I want, says the Lord, to rule and to reign and to declare victory in the Middle East.
We declare victory in the Middle East tonight. We declare victory in America tonight.
For the Spirit of God says hear oh people of Zion. Those who have been afraid in Zion, those who have been afraid in this nation, Fear not! For your news media has intimidated you and therefore it is My turn. Next week I will arise. I will change everything. For they have unfairly spoken against an African man and I'm not talking about Jeremiah Wright. I'm talking about Obama. For God said even though you may think this or that there is an element of righteousness inside of him to reach out for Jesus. Therefore I will sway it next week says the Spirit of God and I will cause My man, My power to exalt in the White House what is necessary to declare victory. For this time I shall rise up and I shall make known who I am in a way that I have never done it in this nation, says the Lord.
For the Spirit of God says, do not say is it this one or is it that one. Hear me out. I am raising up My mantle, My voice. This nation shall be awakened to a spiritual activity that has been dead for 42 years. Listen to me says the Lord. I will take over in a way and in a fashion that will bring a force of spiritual unity in this nation for the first time. You can believe it or not. I will take white and I will take African, and I will bring a unity in the church between the two of them, says the Spirit of God.
This night in America and this next week, God has informed us to watch as he unfolds and reveals things so that you will know that your nation has not been set aside for division and discord but a time in the church where African American, where white or Caucasian, where Hispanic and every race in this nation under the spiritual guidance of the Spirit within a midst of war and division will bring them to a place of unity.
And God said where one race stood on the steps and covered the fields with million men marches and Jesus proclamations, there shall be one of the greatest gatherings at the Capitol that you have ever seen, says the Spirit of God. This time it shall not be black, it shall not be white, it shall not be Hispanic it shall not be from this or that belief but there shall be a unified sound. Two years from now where they will hear the sounds of faith and unity and within this next reign, there will be laws that will be changed in favor of the most High God. Not because of Democrat, not because of Republican, but because of spiritual unity and intervention. I will bring you out of what they call a recession into your highest economy that youâ€TMve ever had in your next four years, says the Spirit of God. Do not think it impossible, for it shall be so. For the gatekeepers of this nation are not the Mayors nor the Senators. The gatekeepers of this nation are not the Congressmen or the Congresswomen. Yes, they are gatekeepers but the gatekeepers (I am speaking of) of this nation are the spiritual leaders the Apostles and the Prophets the Teachers, the Evangelists the Pastors that Iâ€TMve raised up. And there shall be a sound of unity that will call from heaven the manifestation of God as it has never been in this nation. Get ready for your sons and yours daughters will prophesy just like Joel said in the last days. In the last days your sons and your daughters, they shall be prophets and prophetesses and your old men shall dream dreams. Your young men shall have visions. This is that time, says the Lord of hosts.
Let not your opinion cloud your spiritual mind. You say, what are you saying? The Spirit of God says, call them not denominations rather abominations, for I am not speaking of these that have built walls. Iâ€TMm speaking of the true warriors that shall sway the political field, that will sway the justice. It shall be more than a million gathered, more than a million gathered! And God said they shall say Washington; what is this? This is a sound that we have never heard before.
And God said I will take the entire Northeast and I will shake it and the double portion that I promised upon the Elisha generation shall be released. Do not say we are in recession, for I will take the oil crisis and bring it to an end and the rapidity of it shall take place because of the unity of the saints and the unity of the of the gatekeepers. Get ready for what you have seen on the television regarding Jeremiah Wright and everybody else is not for evil but for good. I will turn it around and bring unity in My house says the Lord of Hosts.
Your present President will not leave his office or his term in shame. There will be a very precise vindication of numerous things that were scorned, that were mocked by men that thought they knew but understood nothing. And when the baton is handed over, God said there shall be no fear in the nation. Now take that and be secure.
I speak not as a politician tonight. I speak to you as a prophetic voice. Not tolerated but celebrated by the people. Stand firm, you and your house will serve the Lord. And as the prophet Joel said in the last days, your sons and your daughters... Sons and daughters are being raised up to prophesy and to have visions. Old men to dream the dreams. That mantle has been cast upon the Church. Therefore I would say Your time of acceleration has reached its peak. You're taking off!

Mr. Jackson, I really do believed you have missed it. You gave your comparisons of both parties, now, let me give mine..I am an Independent and I had a chance to view both rallies and this is the "Spirit" I saw.
GOP rally.
1. Division
2. Lies
3. False Accusations
4. Hatred
5. One dominant race
Democratic rally.
1. Laughter
2. Unity
3. Excitement
4. White, Black, Asian, Latino
5. The Future
And you tell me that the GOP is the Spirit of God. I think not. I voted Republican in the last 4elections and look where it has gotten us. Even from a world standard they cannot stand our nation...Barack is not perfect, but, he has the right Spirit to be used by God....I am a Christian and I am proud to be voting for Barack Obama.
I read the following article which is great:
"I am an evangelical Christian with a record of voting in line with the Republican Party. This year, however, I am casting my vote for Barack Obama. My support for Obama stands on its own, and has been well documented throughout this blog. But why would an evangelical Christian vote for a Democrat? The answer is as much a reflection of what Obama stands for as it is what the GOP does not.
Last week I received an email from Dr. James Dobson – whose internet ministry I subscribe to – imploring me to “vote my values,” meaning to vote for the candidate whose “pro-life” and pro traditional marriage rhetoric carried Dr. Dobson’s stamp of approval. My immediate thought was: Why should I vote two of my values to the exclusion of all others? In that question lies the problem of the Christian allegiance to the Republican Party.
Since this country’s founding, Christians have politicized Biblical values (we have as much right to do so as any other group that wants this nation to reflect its beliefs) and have helped the U.S. become a beacon of light to the world. The problem, I now realize, with the union of Christians to the GOP, is that we’ve aligned ourselves with a spokes group that sees Christians as nothing more than a voting bloc to pander to with lip service about two passion-evoking issues while ignoring other values that form the core of our beliefs. And as they grip our hearts with life and marriage, the GOP exploits our values to demonize or vilify those with opposing viewpoints.
A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
John 13:34-35
GOP leadership has (perhaps with the willing participation of some Christian leaders) twisted and distilled our values to the point where we are just hot-button sound bites wrapped up in a platform designed to benefit the wealthy and corporate classes. In the process, they have turned uninformed Christians (me among them) into “single-issue voters,” sheepishly towing the Party line while it exploits the name of God and bastardizes our ideals to foment hatred, division and racism and to engender animosity toward Christians by associating us with a platform that is anathema to God’s love.
The party that sprang back to executive power in 2001 (never mind 1994’s broken “contract with America”) did so headed by a self-professed Christian who took no issue with smearing his opponent (John McCain) with the racist lie that he’d illegitimately fathered a mongrel child. George Bush went on to run not only two of the most vile campaigns in recent memory, but also to hold one of the most deceptive and secretive presidencies ever (kudos to Nixon for the one-upmanship).
Today’s GOP wants to strike out further, exploiting Christian principles to preach a message of hate, division, racism and confused class warfare. Whether it be Nancy Pfotenhauer proclaiming that northern Virginia – which is leaning toward Obama – is not the “real Virginia”, Joe McCain (John’s brother) calling blue-leaning Arlington and Alexandria “communist country”, Michele Bachmann calling for a congressional witch hunt to weed out congressmen – like Obama, apparently – who are “anti-American”, Sarah Palin calling small towns in “red states” the home of “real Americans” (not to mention her derision of community organizers), or Robin Hayes claiming that “liberals hate real Americans that work and achieve and believe in God”, the GOP is doing all it can in the waning days of this campaign to create sloganized hatred and division in this country. And with the “Joe the Plumber” tour, John McCain is trying to trick Americans into falling for the perverse lie that somehow working-class, blue collar tradesmen are economically aligned with the top 5% of wage earners and are on the losing end of a mythical “class warfare” that Obama is waging against the working class. And as if that’s not a far enough transgression, the GOP is on a “religious crusade” to paint all Arabs and Muslims as evil terrorists and to “otherize” a respected United States Senator and fellow Christian who is running for President and happens to be African-American, calling him every conceivable demonized and incendiary word other than (and in at least one notable case, including) coming out and saying “he’s black.” And if they cannot win again through fear, division and racism, the GOP is fully prepared to use the subterfuge of voter fraud to conceal their disgusting efforts at voter disenfranchisement (each word links to a separate news article).
GOP strategists have substituted hatemongering for the love of God. And some Christian leaders are complicit in this twisted endeavor. At a recent McCain rally in Davenport, Iowa, Arnold Conrad, former Pastor of the Grace Evangelical Free Church, while leading the invocation, said
I would also pray, Lord, that Your reputation is involved in all that happens between now and November, because there are millions of people around this world praying to their god – whether it’s Hindu, Buddha, Allah – that his opponent wins, for a variety of reasons. And Lord, I pray that You would guard Your own reputation, because they’re going to think that their god is bigger than You, if that happens. So I pray that You will step forward and honor Your own name with all that happens between now and Election Day.
So now God’s reputation is maligned if Obama wins? What of the fact that Obama is a Christian? And what of the Christians who are praying for Obama? Trading on the name of God to castigate your political opponent and recklessly fan the flames of racial, ethnic, religious and socio-economic discord is not of God. And yet, in spite of that, the GOP wants Christians to be co-conspirators in a fundamental breach of Christ’s commandment – the modern equivalent of betraying Christ for 30 pieces of silver – in exchange for the perpetually unfulfilled promise that they will one day overturn Roe v. Wade? Are we actually going to let ourselves fall victim to cookie-cutter religiosity – voting one value while casting all others into the abyss?
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
Luke 4:18-19
Christians have a ministerial calling to provide aid and comfort to those in our society who are poor and oppressed. These persons also represent our values. And yet the benevolent (and otherwise “small government”) Republican party, which has decided that it’s the Federal government’s duty to protect the life of unborn children, wants to leave those children out in the cold when they need healthcare. For the uber-Christian GOP has determined that though unborn children have a right to life, children who are born to economically depressed parents (who are, by the way, disproportionately represented in the statistics of those seeking abortions) do not have the right to life-sustaining healthcare. John McCain’s policies, while making insurance more – and perhaps cripplingly – expensive for working class Americans, do nothing to ensure that the 47 million uninsured Americans have access to insurance and that all children have a right to insurance.
Likewise, the “compassionate conservatives” who want us to “vote our values” use the power they achieve because of those votes to call for tax policies that place a disproportionate burden on struggling Americans (including the Christians who blindly voted their values) while the wealthiest citizens reap disproportionate tax benefits (talk about engendering class warfare). How can the Republican party care about addressing poverty when it’s tax policies actually create poverty? And how can the Republican Party care about its Christian base when it’s economic and health policies actually harm us and the people we’re called to minister to? The notion that we ought to elect a party that robs us of our health and wealth while blaspheming the name of God just because that party waxes rhetorically about the sanctity of life is beyond insulting.
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
2 Timothy 2:15
God wants Christians to not only possess knowledge of the Bible, but also to excel in the knowledge of our trade and to generally possess a dedication to learning that befits a creation endowed with such vast reserves of learning potential. Yet the McCain campaign and GOP operatives are waging a war against intelligence. Whether it’s manipulating the fact that Obama overcame poverty to become a Harvard educated professor who correctly pronounces “Pakistan” to call him an effete elitist, or asking Americans to vote based on slogans (like “Joe Six Pack” or “Joe the Plumber”) that have no relation to reality, Republicans are actually trying to vilify intellectualism (further helping along that class warfare in the process).
When did the party of Teddy Roosevelt decide it was politically expedient to champion mediocrity? With the various “Joe” slogans, Republicans insult blue collar workers everywhere by expecting them to vote for the candidate who’s willing to talk “folksy” and drink a beer with them all the while lying about the fact that “Joes” across America will be worse off under McCain’s tax policies than under Obama’s.
But the poster-child for the Republican assault on intelligence is the once honorable John McCain’s running mate, who, by the way is also an affront to Christians. While professing Christianity, Sarah Palin has shown a penchant for lying whenever she opens her mouth. Whether she’s making up the story that the Alaska legislature fully exonerated her of abuse-of-power charges, proclaiming that Obama is an anti-American terrorist sympathizer, calling Obama a socialist (and now, a communist) who will raise all our taxes and “redistribute wealth”, or reveling in the hatred and rage she incites at her rallies, Palin has proven herself to be a lying, vengeful, slanderous hypocrite who uses Christianity as a resume booster.
She is also an unabashed anti-intellectual. While she’s not insulting working Americans by speaking with a hokey, sixth-grade-reading-level dialect (as though working Americans are too stupid to understand and relate to anything else), Gov. Palin is expecting the American people to swallow the proverbial tripe that she’s qualified potentially for the highest office in the world by virtue of (1) her ability to see Russia, (2) her overseeing of a national guard that might – any day now (whenever Putin “rears his head”) – be called on to defend the U.S. against a highly improbable Russian invasion of Alaska, (3) her recent U.N. coming out party where she, for the first time in her life, met foreign leaders, (4) the fact that her international travel experience is limited to a trip to Kuwait and Germany to visit Alaska National Guard troops – a trip for which she obtained her first passport – last year, and (5) her governance of an oil-rich state. We’re also supposed to ignore the fact that she cannot make it through softball television interviews – for which she had weeks to prepare – without stumbling incoherently through answers to even the simplest of policy questions and getting hopelessly stumped at both the fundamental questions – whether she agrees with the Bush doctrine, and the “gimme” questions – what newspapers she reads.
And after weeks on the campaign trail, she has yet to demonstrate the desire – as Colin Powell put it, the “intellectual curiosity” – to become a student of the serious international and domestic policy issues that she has no comprehension of but seeks to be in charge of. It was appalling that, in her only debate, Gov. Palin excused her inability to answer questions important to the American people by saying “how long have I been at this, like five weeks?” If she cared about anything other than smiling, winking and regurgitating campaign talking points, Palin would have used that “five weeks” to attempt to seriously consider some solutions to our national and international issues.
In that regard, Palin is an insult and a slap in the face to Christians. When stripped of her contrived “qualifications” we are left with a candidate whose only redeeming quality – with regard to the Christian base for whom she was nominated – is that she is a professed Christian who is pro life. And the implication is that Christians are either too stupid, too emotional, or too single-minded to see through her support for our values to the fact that she is woefully unqualified and was selected merely as a pandering tool. Sarah Palin embodies the ultimate betrayal of the trust that we placed in the Republican Party to champion our message.
I am unashamedly pro life and pro traditional marriage. Christ is also, though he would condemn abortion clinic bombers (who, by the way, Ms. Palin, notwithstanding your attempt to dodge the question and pander to the lunatic fringe of your “base”, are terrorists). And though He obviously did not condone the practices of the sinners of His day, Jesus walked among them, rather than separating His followers from them, for to those persons was His ministry.
True, Obama is not pro-life (though he is against gay marriage), but his stance on abortion is conciliatory, rather than divisive: “We may not agree on abortion, but surely we can agree on reducing the number of unwanted pregnancies in this country.” That statement is from his nomination acceptance speech. Obama is thus sincere enough to admit that though he has a differing opinion with fellow Christians on an important issue, he is willing to work together to solve a potentially divisive problem in a way that may remove the impetus for women to seek abortions. It is that desire to unite and seek common ground rather than divide that separates Obama/Biden from McCain/Palin.
I do not have any messianic delusions about Obama, but his career background and political message indicate that he has tapped into Christ’s message, and that he understands that a leader must be an advocate for all of us, not just those in his voting bloc. Contrast Obama’s message in his national introduction speech at the 2004 Democratic Convention with the divisive message of the Republican Party.
…there’s not a liberal America and a conservative America; there’s the United States of America. There’s not a black America and white America and Latino America and Asian America; there’s the United States of America. The pundits…like to slice and dice our country into red states and blue States: red states for Republicans, blue States for Democrats. But I’ve got news for them, too. We worship an awesome God in the blue states, and we don’t like federal agents poking around our libraries in the red states. We coach little league in the blue states and, yes, we’ve got some gay friends in the red states. There are patriots who opposed the war in Iraq, and there are patriots who supported the war in Iraq. We are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes, all of us defending the United States of America. In the end, that’s what this election is about. Do we participate in a politics of cynicism, or do we participate in a politics of hope?
Whether it be his early work as a community organizer and civil rights attorney, his achievement of bipartisan support for ethics and healthcare reform and higher tax credits for low-wage workers while in the Illinois Senate, his involvement with police organizations to enact death penalty reforms and seek an end to racial profiling, or his efforts at improving fiscal transparency (on which he received bipartisan support from John McCain, among others), criminalizing voter intimidation and improving healthcare and education while in the U.S. Senate, Obama has a record of bridging divides, reaching across party lines and working to end the social inequalities that plague the ethnically and economically disadvantaged members of our society. That balanced, unifying leadership is the kind of leadership we need in the White House. We need a leader that restores a sense of hope in a unifying purpose for this country.
[P]art of what has been lost these past eight years can’t just be measured by lost wages or bigger trade deficits. What has also been lost is our sense of common purpose, and that’s what we have to restore…. [T]his, too, is part of America’s promise, the promise of a democracy where we can find the strength and grace to bridge divides and unite in common effort.
Barack Obama, 2008 Democratic Nomination Acceptance Speech
We are a nation of fault lines. The oneness that saw us through the Great Depression and World War II to become the greatest, most powerful and benevolent nation on Earth has been replaced with a fractured society, defined by social discord and plagued by smoldering racial, economic, class and political tensions. We have become a selfish, individualistic, win-at-all-costs society that seems to only recall a unifying purpose in times of national tragedy. While this predicament is not the fault of one political party, no post-Cold War president has yet called Americans to a purpose higher than themselves. And the narrative-stealing “change” agents on the other side have demonstrated that they merely want to help America further dissolve into national obscurity.
As I’ve said before, Barack Obama pledges to change that course, “to bring to our highest office the wisdom, the morals, the ideals and the people necessary to steer the American psyche back on course…to restore in this country a sense of collective purpose and unified destiny.” Having the potential to be more than just a president, Barack is poised to be a transcendent, generational leader both embodying and effectuating reconciliation and restoration. That’s the change we need – a leader who simultaneously calls America back to a time when we were unified in collective pursuit of the “American promise” and forward to a present and future where we can actually attain that promise; a leader committed to genuinely helping the disadvantaged classes in our society achieve equality of opportunity.
These are values Christians can vote for. Obama’s platform calls for providing realistic educational, economic and healthcare opportunities for the poor, for the socially disadvantaged and for the economically distressed workers in our society. Obama’s vision – the veracity of his belief in which is borne out by his record – is for a country where Christians can fellowship with Muslims, where white Americans can break bread with black Americans, where “liberals” can find common ground with “conservatives”. Obama’s pledge is to restore America as a beacon of light for the world. This platform represents a more holistic cross-section of Christian values; for while Christians will not (and should not) agree with every stance taken by another social or religious group, our ministry is to the world and, thus, our political focus should be on electing leaders who not only advocate a broad swath of our values – thereby exhibiting our values to the world – but also effectuate restorative policies that will help those most in need. The time has come to do away with politics that pander to one of our values while employing rhetoric that spawns division and hatred and policies that do the most harm. The time has come for change. This is Barack Obama’s time."
Mr. Jackson, are you really serious when you say John McCain is an "authentic American hero"?
A minister of the gospel saying this...
(shaking my head...)
I believe if we take the time to pray for who to choose God will lead you. Anyone can say they are a christian, but christianity is a lifestyle. Who are we to say one is better than the other because we really don't know either one of these men. Also, it's not just the presidency we should be considered about, what about congressmen, house of rep; they are the one that has alot to do with what the president can do. How many times there has been good presidents, but they get veto on changes they want to make. It is bigger than just the president. So many people are looking at race and not realizig Obama is both race (white and black), so what's the problem. We can put God all up and through this, but none of us really know who God would choose, because those of who who accepted his son, is his children as well. So both McCain and Obama say they are saved, then who can say one is better than the other, because both are his children. Lifestyle is the key. Voting is the key. Just vote on who you think is best, but don't put God in it as saying McCain is the best choice, God's choice because we don't know.
Kimberly Daniels article to me seemed fair and sometimes people cannot handle a prophet's black or white statements. You need to read her article again. She has not demonized Obama she was just letting us know that we are Christians first and we must stand for what God's word says. This is a cruial hour not only for this nation but for the Body of Christ. Again, I want to stress to the Body of Christ who may be voting for Obama, You are christian first and you must NOT COMPROMISE the gospel of Jesus Christ! Remember LIFE! Hmm. Glad I won't be here when the Anti-Christ shows up because he will BRING this same type of persona that Obama shows. Not saying that Obama is the Anti-Christ. Had to clarify that!
The power shift has come. People who once thought that they had no voice, no power, and no impact have discovered that they do. Those who have enjoyed the priviledge of power are scared, nervous and angry that they have become part of the minority in this country. What is awesome is that the majority is not a majority connected to race, gender, politics or even economics but of human unity and dignity. The anonymous writer that presented the long blog put it as eloquently and accurately as it could be put: political parties (the republicans in particular) pander to the Christians and make them single issue voters and could care less about the Christian worldview. They accomplish this through the manipulation of christian leaders who (not so secretly) desire political power to affect change at the expense of their prophetic voice. I heard one pastor say yesterday "its not the govenments job to take care of the poor, it is the churches job" I thought to myself "its not the government's job to bailout Wall Street either, its not the governments job to "spread democracy, etc" My point is that our Christian leaders are using biblical principles when they are convenient and ignoring them when it condemns their positions.
Whether we vote McCain or Obama is really not the point..the point to me is that this process has exposed the church as a pawn of the political suystem and some of our leaders as out of touch and totally deluded.
It is definitely time to pray!
Look what the Lord has done! It's prophetic, ordained and God did it.
Look at what the Lord has done. Senator Barack Obama has been elected as the 44th President of The United States of America. This is the day that the Lord has made and I will rejoice and be glad in it.
the words of another person who allows others to think for him. the "abortion card" has been worn out and wrinkled to obtain votes and get into office, yet the graves of the unborn are becoming deeper by the day. tell me, mr. jackson...where are the stem cells coming from? God is tired of dead babies being used for self-promotion. if you are looking for a hero, look to Christ, not a bitter old man with one foot in the grave, the other on a banana peel, and a trashy gun-toting woman who can't teach her daughter how to take care of herself if she chooses to have sex outside of God's plan.
God bless President-elect Obama
God bless Ameria!
THE CHANGE THAT WE ARE SEEING IS SO DIFFERENT THAT EVEN OUR "LEADERS" HAVE MISSED IT BECAUSE THEIR PERSPECTIVE HAVE BEEN SKEWED, IT SHOWS THEY ARE NOT PERFECT. THESE ARE THE FACTS:
1. OBAMA HAS BEEN JUDGED & VILIFIED MORE HARSHLY - BY THE CHURCH THAN McCAIN- YET GOD HAS "PERMITTED" HIS ELECTIONTO THE HIGHEST OFFICE IN THE WORLD
2.OBAMA'S VIEWS ON ABORTION HAS BEEN MISREAD AND MISUNDERSTOOD INTENTIONALLY.
3. CHRISTIANS PROPHETS HAVE SHOW SO MUCH ARROGANCE AND PROHESIED ACCORDING TO THEIR HEART'S DESIRES.
4. GOD IS EXPOSING SOME OF OUR PROPHETS' HEARTS AND ASKING THEM TO SEEK HIM WITH UNBIASED MINDS
5. ALL THOSE WHO PURPORT TO SPEAK ON GOD'S BEHALF NOW REALISE THAT HE REALLY REQUIRES NO SPOKESPERSON, HE IS MORE THAN COMPETENT OF SPEAKING FOR HIMSELF
6. THE REPUBLICAN PART THROUGH THIS ELECTION (INCLUDING SARAH PALIN) DID A LOT OF UN-CHRISTIAN THINGS WHICH IN NO WAY GLORIFIES CHRIST & THE TIME HAS COME FOR THE CHURCH TO RE-CONSIDER ITS POSITION WITH THAT PARTY- ITS A DISGRACE AND MANY WELL MEANING CHRISTIANS OUT THERE ARE ASHAMED OF THIS ASSOCIATION AND SOME OF OUR LEADERS WHO SPOKE FOR/WITH THEM.
7. CHRISTIANS WERE ASKED TO PRAY AND FAST FOR DAYS BY APOSTLES & PROHETS FOR GOD TO PUT HIS CHOICE IN THE WHITE HOUSE (I.E. PREVENT OBAMA FROM BECOMING PRESIDENT? NOW WHAT?? HAS GOD SPOKEN? BECAUSE WE ALL PRAYED & FASTED HARD- PLEASE DO NOT SAY IT IS THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE, WE DID PRAY!!
8. OUR LEADERS ARE NOW COMPARING OBAMA TO KING SAUL, SO THAT MAKES JOIN MCCAIN OR PALIN KING DAVID?? INTERESTING.
9. SOME OF OUR LEADERS ARE SAYING THEY SUPPORTED MCCAIN BECAUSE OF PALIN, WHY?? THEY WISHING FOR HIM TO DIE IN OFFICE SO SHE COULD TAKE OVER? SHE WAS UNQUALIFIED IN MANY RESPECTS- JUST LIKE MANY CHRISTIAN THINK THAT ALL THEY NEED IS GOD ON THEIR SIDE WITHOUT ACTUALLY PREPARING THEMSELVES.
10. OUR LEADERS DO NOT SEEM TO REALISE THAT EVEN GOD IS TIRED OF UNDER-PERFORMIMNG CHRISTIANS IN THE WHITE HOUSE- HE NEEDS SMART, SEASONED GOD FEARING BELIEVERS WHO KNOW THEIR STUFF LIKE BEZALEEL & AHOLIAB IN EXODUS 36:1 . THAT IS WHY GOD RAISED UP THE LIKES OF MOSES, DANIEL & JOSEPH WHERE THEY WERE TRAINED BUT NOT OVERLY INFLUENCED BY THEIR SOCIETIES.
11. WE AS CHRISTIANS HAVE RAISED OURSELVES UP AS THE "KNOW IT ALL" BECAUSE WE KNOW GOD & SPEAK IN TONGUES ETC, AND THIS IS A HUMBLING MOMENT FOR ALL OF US, A LOT OF SOULD SEARCHING IS REQUIRED, GOD HAS CHANGED OUR AGENDA FOR 2009 WITH THIS ELECTION AND WE WILL TREAD MORE CAREFULLY.
12. FINALLY, IT IS NOT ALL CLEAR WHY GOD HAS RAISED UP OBAMA (ONLY GOD CAN GET A PERSON OF COLOUR INTO THE WHITE HOUSE) IS FOR GOOD OR OTHERWISE??? WE ARE ALL WATCHING LIKE STUDENTS SEEING THE GREAT I AM, TEH ANCIENT OF DAYS AT WORK, HE OUT SMARTED THE DEVIL WHEN HE SENT HIS SON, HE'S ABOUT TO DO IT AGAIN!
STAY HUMBLE FOLKS!
Christians should pray that God's will be done. God is the only judge of this world and does not need our "help" to make a decision. We should read our Bibles and go back to the task of sharing Christ to the world, and stop trying to "clean the fish before we catch it".
Do the the authors of the blogs read our ramblings? If so perhaps they may be able to enlighten Palin about her behavior, specifically her words. For out of the abundance of the mouth the heart speaks. I wonder what would had been the results of the election if Palin spoke like Jesus commanded us. Love your enemies. A harsh word stirs up anger. Let no corript communication proceed out of your mouth. Instead of fanning the flames of hate and division what would had happened if Palin had spoke positively about Obama? Unheard of in politics.
